Tip: Before you purchase your tickets, you should calculate all transportation expenses to the hotel to ensure the best overall rate. If for example you are planning on taking the bus from San Jose, or renting a car, you will most likely have to stay the night in a hotel. The direct bus to Nosara leaves San Jose at 6 a.m. and we do not recommend driving a rental car at night. There are now shuttles running from Liberia to Nosara so a more expensive ticket to Liberia might end up saving you money rather than the more affordable ticket to San Jose.
Would you like to offset the emissions caused by your flight to Costa Rica?
Carbon offsets are voluntary donations made by individuals, companies, or governments that compensate, or offset, greenhouse gas emissions from transportation, electricity use, and other sources. In an effort to promote sustainable development and tourism, the Costa Rican Ministry of Environmental Affairs has created a program in which tourists can compensate the carbon emissions caused by their international flights by investing in programs that preserve and reforest natural areas within Costa Rica. If you would like to calculate and offset the emissions caused by your flight to Costa Rica, visit: www.fonafifo.com.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Your passport must have at least six months left before expiry to enter the country. THEY WILL SEND YOU BACK if it’s expiry date is less than six months.
Taxis are the way to go when traveling in groups of 3 or more, or with a lot of luggage and/or boards. From San Jose the drive is 5-6 hours and costs $240. From Liberia the drive is 2 ½ - 3 hours and costs $140. We are happy to arrange a driver to meet you at the airport. Contact us here.
Car Rental is very convenient and affordable in Costa Rica. We have several car companies here in Playa Guiones if you would like to return your car at any point during your vacation there is a $50 drop-fee. Although everything on the beach is within walking distance it is nice to have a car if you would like to make day trips to other beaches. We highly recommend a 4WD year round because the last hour of your trip is on a bumpy dirt road. During the Green Season (May thru Dec) a 4WD is mandatory.
Please see below for driving tips and directions.
The next time you choose to rent a car in Costa Rica, we recommend that you choose a rental car company that allows you to compensate your carbon emissions. When you choose to compensate your carbon emissions, your donations will be invested in reforestation projects within Costa Rica that will aid in the mitigation of future greenhouse gasses and the protection of biodiversity. Companies such as National Rent a Car or Adobe Rent a Car offer their customers the opportunity to offset their carbon emission by paying an additional amount per day of vehicle use.
We have 2 local airplanes that offer breathtaking flights from the major airports of Liberia and San Jose: Nature Air and Sansa. Nature Air flies out of the Tobias Bolanos Airport in Pavas, located about a 40 minute taxi ride from the San Jose airport while Sansa leaves directly from the San Jose airport. There are several flights per day to Nosara from both Liberia and San Jose. The cost varies slightly depending on what time of year however averages between $100 - $125 one-way per person. Travel time from Liberia is 20 minutes and from San Jose 45 minutes. All domestic flights in Costa Rica are certified as being Carbon Neutral and will compensate all carbon emissions emitted by your flight.

Our most affordable and adventurous option is the local bus service. You can catch a “direct” bus from the coca-cola station downtown San Jose (which is 20 minutes east of the airport)…or anywhere bus stop along the highway to Nosara. The coca-cola station is well known for theft so please be extremely careful by guarding your bags from all directions at all times. If you choose to catch the bus along the highway you will most likely have to stand the duration of the trip. There are also several more buses throughout the day that change buses in Nicoya. The last bus from Nicoya to Nosara is at 5 pm. The cost of a ticket is only $7-$8 however you will most likely have to stay the night in a hotel or hostel depending on what time you arrive.
From Liberia you also will have to change busses in Nicoya. Contact us directly for a more up to date bus schedule.
Directions from the bus: You will have to take the bus to Nicoya then transfer to the bus to Nosara. Playa Guiones is 5 miles BEFORE the town of Nosara where the bus stops so you will have to pay attention to be sure you do not end up in Nosara Central. Tell the driver you are going to Playa Guiones, Hotel KayaSol. There are 3 roads to Guiones. We are the last one. You can take either the 2nd or 3rd road as both have signs however the last one is a shorter walk. The bus will stop first at Cafe De Paris/Coconut Harry’s which is the first Guiones stop. After the bus stops at Coconut Harry’s, skip the 2nd road and get off at the 3rd and final road. Walk straight down the road towards the beach and you will see us on the right after the Mini Super.
